PAGASA said Ompong is expected to make landfall in Isabela-Cagayan on Saturday morning and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday.

As of 7 a.m. on Friday, Ompong's eye was at 605 km east of Baler, Aurora. It packs maximum sustained winds of 205 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 255 kph.

Super typhoon category less likely

PAGASA said it is still possible for Ompong's maximum sustained winds to increase but believes it will not reach the super typhoon level as earlier feared.

"Hindi natin inaalis yung possibility na posibleng magtaas yung maximum sustained winds niya, pero possible po yung upper limit lang ng typhoon category yung ma-reach nito," PAGASA weather specialist Ezra Bulquerin said at a press briefing.

"In terms of sa super typhoon category, mababa na po yung tsansa niya," he added.

Habagat

In its latest weather update, PAGASA said the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) enhanced by the typhoon will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains over Visayas while scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains over Palawan, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao and Caraga.

"Residents in these areas, especially those living near river channels, in low-lying areas and in mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and to continue monitoring for updates," it said.

Fishermen and those with small seacraft were likewise advised not to venture out over the seaboards of areas with storm signals and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and of Mindanao. —KBK, GMA News
