Sufficient rainfall across the country may reach a near-normal level in July, according to state weather bureau PAGASA on Thursday.

"Pagdating ng July, since this is already the onset usually of the rainy season in the country, marami pong ulan ang ine-expect natin especially over the western sections of the country, more than 500 millimeters," said Rusy Abastillas from the Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section of the weather bureau during a forum on water crisis held in UP Diliman.

PAGASA also projects that as early as May, some parched provinces may already experience rain.

"For May, we expect that Mindanao and Northern Luzon and some part of Western Visayas na magiging near normal and below normal na lang sa mga areas sa Southern Luzon at iba pang parts of Visayas," she said.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country, however, will likely continue to experience hot temperatures until June.

By June, 44 provinces are seen to experience drought, while 35 may still potentially be under a dry spell.

Meanwhile, Abastillas mentioned that the occurrence of El Niño may also induce high amounts of rainfall in the months to follow, as supported by PAGASA's data since the 1950s.

"Mas marami po 'yung ulan na matatanggap during El Niño conditions compared doon sa neutral conditions for the months of July, August, September," she said.

"So hindi ibig sabihin na pag may El Niño tayo talagang i-expect natin na walang ulan because this is an extreme event na pwedeng mag-iba 'yung ating climate pattern," she added.

Up to two tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility in May.

PAGASA has issued an El Niño advisory in February and warned that varying degrees of the dry condition may be felt in different provinces.

The lack of sufficient rain has taken its toll on the agricultural sector in the past few months, with damages amounting to P5 billion, according to the Department of Agriculture Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center. — RSJ, GMA News
