Metro Manila experienced 39°C init factor for almost 4 hours Wednesday

An "init factor" or heat index of 39°C was experienced for almost four straight hours in Metro Manila on Wednesday, according to GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz.

In a weather report in GMA's 24 Oras, Mang Tani said that the init factor in the National Capital Region was already 37°C at 10 a.m. and peaked to 39°C at around noon until 4 p.m.

The heat index is the measure of the temperature that a person feels. It measures human discomfort, and is computed by factoring in the humidity and the actual air temperature, as well as other conditions.

PAGASA cautions that a high heat index could result in heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or the potentially deadly heat stroke.

Residents of Dagupan and Cotabato should prepare for the possibility of a sweltering weather on Thursday as the heat index in their areas may reach 42°C.

Tuguegarao and Cabanatuan, on the other hand, may experience 41°C "init factor."

Tagbilaran and Catbalogan may have a heat index of 39°C.

Meanwhile, data from MetraWeather showed that Metro Manila may expect cloudy skies and isolated rains on Thursday afternoon. — Dona Magsino/BM, GMA News
