Onyok now a severe tropical storm; Signal No. 1 up over Batanes, Babuyan


Tropical Storm Onyok (international name: Mitag) has intensified and has turned into a severe tropical storm, PAGASA said in its early morning forecast on Sunday.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been hoisted over Batanes and Babuyan Islands, as winds of 30-60 kph are expected in 36 hours.

The trough or extension of Onyok will cause scattered light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms from Sunday to Monday morning over Cagayan Valley and Bicol Region.

The severe tropical storm "is less likely to make landfall in the country throughout the forecast period," PAGASA said.

However, Onyok may intensify and develop into a typhoon within 24 hours, and PAGASA said TCWS No. 2 may be raised over Batanes.

Small seacraft were advised not to travel over the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon, as well as those areas under TCWS No. 1 as sea conditions will be may be rough.

As of 4 a.m. Sunday, Onyok's eye or center was located at 605 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Onyok has maximum sustained winds of up to 95 kph near the center with gustiness of up to 115 kph.

The severe tropical storm is moving west at a speed of 30 kph.

By Tuesday morning, Onyok is expected to be outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
