Onyok slows down but Signal No. 1 still up over Batanes, Babuyan Islands

Typhoon Onyok (international name: Mitag) slowed down on Monday morning but Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Batanes and Babuyan Islands, PAGASA said in its early morning forecast.

These areas will experience winds of 30 to 60 kph in the next 36 hours.

The trough or extension of Onyok will bring scattered light to moderate rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms on Monday until Tuesday morning over Cagayan, Apayao and Ilocos provinces.

"Onyok is less likely to make landfall in the country," PAGASA said.

The typhoon is moving northwest over the Philippine Sea at 20 kph and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday night.

As of 4 a.m., Onyok's eye or center was located at 180 km northeast of Basco, Batanes.

It has maximum sustained winds of up to 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

Sea conditions will be potentially rough in the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon including Batanes and Babuyan Islands. "Sea travel is risky, especially for small seacraft," PAGASA said.

The weather bureau advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned to take the necessary precautions and await the next severe weather bulletin to be issued at 11 a.m. —KG, GMA News
