Auring likely to weaken further ahead of expected landfall; Signal 1 up in several areas

Tropical Depression Auring is likely to weaken further ahead of its expected landfall over the Dinagat Islands-Eastern Samar-Leyte area within the next six to 12 hours on Monday, and to weaken "considerably" again once it does, PAGASA said.

In its 2 a.m. Severe Weather Bulletin, the state weather bureau said that Auring, which had weakened from a tropical storm to a tropical depression late Monday night, continues to move west-northwest towards the Dinagat Islands and Homonhon Island.

It will bring moderate to heavy rains over Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Camiguin; and light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, MIMAROPA, Quezon, and the rest of Visayas, Caraga, and Northern Mindanao, until the morning.

From the morning through late evening, meanwhile, Auring will bring moderate to heavy rains over Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Quezon, Marinduque, and Romblon, and light to moderate and at times heavy rains over Aurora, the rest of the Visayas, CALABARZON, and MIMAROPA.

PAGASA warned that flooding, including flash floods, and landslides are likely during prolonged or heavy rainfall in these areas.

However, it is increasingly likely that Auring will weaken ahead of landfall due to "persistent high vertical wind shear associated with the surge of the Northeast Monsoon," the weather bureau said.

Once it makes landfall, it is seen to weaken "considerably" again "due to significant terrain interaction and the increasing wind shear, leading to deterioration into a remnant low within 24 hours, possibly sooner."
