MRT3, LRT1 resume train ops after safety checks due to Calatagan earthquake


The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) and the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT1) resumed operations on Saturday morning after passing safety checks following the magnitude 6.6 earthquake in Calatagan, Batangas.

At around 5:40 a.m., the MRT3 announced the temporary halting of operations.

“Kaugnay ng  6.7 magnitude na lindol na naganap kaninang 4:49 ng umaga sa Calatagan, Batangas, pansamantalang itinigil ang operasyon ng MRT-3 para magsagawa ng safety check at i-assess ang kalagayan ng mga istasyon at pasilidad nito,” the MRT-3 management posted on Twitter.

(In connection with the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 4:49 am in Calatagan, Batangas, the operation of MRT3 was temporarily suspended to conduct a safety check and assess the condition of its stations and facilities.)

 

 

At around 7:04 a.m., the MRT3 management announced that they are back to normal operations.

 

 

The LRT1 management likewise announced that they already completed their safety check on the train line.

“Update as of 6:25AM: LRT-1 is now operational in all 19 stations after receiving safety clearance to operate. Salamat at ingat po sa biyahe!” its management said on Twitter.

 

 

The LRT1 operations were halted at 5:13 a.m. to allow the full inspection of tracks and facilities of the train line.

 

 

As for the LRT2, operations were halted also but resumed at 8:01 a.m.

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit Calatagan in Batangas at 4:48 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

PHIVOLCS initially reported the quake as having magnitude 6.7 but later revised this and downgraded it to magnitude 6.6.

The quake was felt as far as Metro Manila and Bulacan.

The magnitude 6.6 jolt was followed by a magnitude 5.5 earthquake, initially reported at magnitude 5.1, that hit Calatagan again at 4:57 a.m. —Hana Bordey/KG, GMA News
