Veteran actress, radio star Ester Chavez passes away at 93


Veteran actress and radio star Ester Chavez passed away at 93 years old last May 31.

Her daughter-in-law Esther Misa Chavez announced the sad news on her Facebook account.

"Ester Chavez, TV and movie actress, and Queen of Filipino radio drama passed away at 93. She started her radio career at 17 and was still doing radio once a week at the age of 87," she wrote in the post sharing a photo of Ester.

"Her voice recognizable by generations of radio listeners. She was a star in Tia Dely’s daily radio drama. In retirement, she was a whip," she added.

"She could crack up her caregivers with her dry humor. My namesake and mother-in-law, 'Aling Chayong' of 'Ilaw ng Tahanan' fame, light of our home, made her final curtain call on May 31, 2021," she ended her note.

Ester who is recognized as a "radio drama queen" is survived by her two sons, Armando and Andrew.

She also starred on television and films including "Tang-Tarang-Tang," "Anna Liza," "Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit," "Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap," and "Maging Sino Ka Man," among others. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
