George Clooney reveals he once gave each of his 14 closest friends $1M cash

George Clooney has revealed that he once gave each of his 14 closest friends $1 million in cash in his new profile interview with GQ.

According to GQ, it happened in September 2013 right before the premiere of George’s film “Gravity.” For George the film was a “very good deal” and he was paid based on percentages of box-office revenue and so was his costar Sandra Bullock.

“And I thought, what I do have are these guys who’ve all, over a period of 35 years, helped me in one way or another,” he told GQ.

George narrated how he had “slept on their couches when I was broke. They loaned me money when I was broke. They helped me when I needed help over the years. And I’ve helped them over the years.”

“We’re all good friends. And I thought, you know, without them I don’t have any of this. And we’re all really close, and I just thought basically if I get hit by a bus, they’re all in the will. So why the f--- am I waiting to get hit by a bus?” he narrated.

GQ said George came up with the suitcase-of-cash idea but at first he didn’t know how to get $14 million out all at once.

The GQ profile feature said George researched and later learned about “an undisclosed location” in Los Angeles where pallets of cash are held for sale.

GQ reporter Zach Baron wrote: “So Clooney got an old beat-up van that said ‘Florist’ on it, like he was in a heist movie, and he drove downtown, and he got in an elevator with the florist’s van, and he took the van down to the vault and loaded it up with cash. He told no one but his assistant and a couple of security guys that were shitting themselves.”

In 2017, one of Clooney’s longtime friends, Rande Gerber, told MSNBC that the actor invited his closest friends over dinner one night and surprising each of them with a suitcase full of cash.

“We open it up, and it’s $1 million in $20 bills,” Gerber told MSNBC. “Every one of us—14 of us—got a million dollars. Every single one of us. We were in shock. Like, ‘what is this?’”

George said he gave a speech about how much each of them meant to him and that he wanted to give back.

“And I just held up a map and I just pointed to all the places I got to go in the world and all the things I’ve gotten to see because of them. And I said, ‘how do you repay people like that?’ And I said, ‘oh, well: How about a million bucks?’ And the fun part about it was: that was the 27th, the 28th of September. A year later, on the 27th of September, just by happenstance, was the day I got married,” he narrated to GQ. – Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/RC, GMA News
