Hollywood star Rob Lowe explains why he's 'obsessed' with the Philippines

Hollywood star Rob Lowe is "obsessed" with the Philippines — despite never having been there.

In his podcast "Literally! With Rob Lowe," the actor spoke with Fil-Am comic Jo Koy about how this came to be.

"I'm obsessed with the Philippines and I've never been there," he said. "Here's why I'm obsessed with the Philippines. When I was a kid and I wanted to be an actor and I moved to Malibu, there was an actor who lived three doors down. A real Hollywood actor. His name was Martin Sheen, but he was never there, because he was in the Philippines for years, shooting this movie called 'Apocalypse Now.'"

"Apocalypse Now" is a 1979 American epic war film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Aside from Martin Sheen, it also starred Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall.

Lowe said Sheen was in the Philippines in 1977.

"And then when he came home, it was story after story after story of the Philippines, so in my imagination, the Philippines is this mythic place from all of the 'Apocalypse Now' stories I heard from Martin," he said.

Lowe also called Journey frontman Arnel Pineda a "certified genius," and told Jo Koy that he enjoyed watching his Philippine special on Netflix, called "Jo Koy: In His Elements."

"It's awesome," Lowe said. "What is about the Philippines that every time I see it...you can feel the air. It feels like there's a very specific energy."

Rob Lowe, 56, is an American actor who entered the entertainment industry in his teens. He is known for appearing in "St. Elmo's Fire" (1985), "The Outsiders" (1983), "Wayne's World" (1992), and "Contact" (1997). —JCB, GMA News
