Two weeks after winning his first National Basketball Association title with the Miami Heat, Filipino-American coach Erik Spoelstra sent Philippine President Benigno Aquino III a signed championship cap. The Official Gazette website posted on its Twitter account Monday noon a photo of the signed championship cap sent by Spoelstra to Aquino. "To PNoy... Best wishes! (from) Coach Spo," read the message on the cap.
The Official Gazette however neglected to say when Aquino received the cap. Spoelstra, 41, is the son of Dutch-Irish-American Jon Spoelstra, who was an NBA executive for the Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, Buffalo Braves and New Jersey Nets. He is the grandson of the late Watson Spoelstra, a sportswriter in the Detroit area. His mother, Elisa Celino, is from San Pablo in Laguna. Spoelstra last visited the Philippines in August 2011. - AMD, GMA NewsPhoto: Signed Miami Heat championship cap sent by Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra to President Aquino. twitter.com/govph/status/2… — Official Gazette PH (@govph) July 2, 2012
