PHL trounces Kazakhstan, 96-59, to open Asian Games basketball campaign

The Philippines opened its 2018 Asian Games basketball campaign with a rousing 96-59 victory over Kazakhstan on Thursday in Indonesia.

The Yeng Guiao-coached squad showed its bite on defense early, allowing just one field goal in the opening period to take a 16-9 lead after the first quarter.

A three-pointer by lead guard Stanley Pringle in the dying seconds of the second period pushed the Philippine advantage to 21 points, 41-20, at the half.

Team Pilipinas held strong in the third quarter, leaving Kazakhstan to raise the white flag in the fourth.

Pringle led the scoring parade for the Philippines with 18 points, while Christian Standhardinger scored 15. James Yap added 12 points in his first outing for the national team since 2009, while Paul Lee and Chris Tiu chipped 10 and nine, respectively.

The Philippines will take on China on August 21, with the squad expected to get a boost from Jordan Clarkson, who arrived at the gym midway through the game after flying in from the United States via Singapore. --JST, GMA News
