Derrick White of the San Antonio Spurs out for 6-8 weeks

San Antonio Spurs guard Derrick White will miss six to eight weeks with a torn ligament in his left heel, head coach Gregg Popovich announced Friday.

It's the third significant injury to the Spurs' backcourt in less than a week. Starting point guard Dejounte Murray was lost for the season to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Sunday, and rookie Lonnie Walker IV will miss six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee on Monday.

White started at point guard in Wednesday's preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks, tallying 15 points, six rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes. He scored just two points on 0-of-7 shooting across 18 minutes in his previous game Sunday.

The 24-year-old averaged 3.2 points in 8.2 minutes per game last season after the Spurs took him 29th overall in the 2017 draft.

Bryn Forbes, a former undrafted free agent in his third season, will start Friday's preseason finale at the point against the Orlando Magic. Forbes averaged 6.9 points in 19.0 minutes per game last season.

The Spurs plan to keep Patty Mills, who scored 10.0 points in 25.7 minutes per game last season, as the sixth man. The longest tenured player on the roster, Mills had started a total of 18 games in six seasons in San Antonio before starting 36 of 82 last year. — Field Level Media/Reuters
