GAB investigates Lapu-Lapu Siquijor game in VisMin Super Cup

The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) on Wednesday said it is investigating a game between Lapu-Lapu City and Siquijor in the VisMin Super Cup held in Alcantara, Cebu.

In a statement, GAB chair Abraham Mitra said they are waiting for the report of its regulators on whether the players committed violations of the agency's rules on professional athletes.

"We would like to remind our players that a license to practice profession is not a right, but a concession and a privilege granted by the government. Now, if they fail to abide by the rules, the government has the right to step in to impose necessary sanctions or revoke such a privilege," Mitra said. "Shape up or ship out!" he added.

Mitra added that while he believes in self-regulation, "GAB is always ready to step in anytime, especially when integrity is at stake."

The VisMin Super Cup is a professional basketball league which consists of seven teams from Visayas and Mindanao.

The league earlier decided to cancel the game between Lapu-Lapu City and Siquijor at halftime due to a power outage.

"We had a power interruption here in Alcantara. Though we have a generator, it could not sustain our internet which has forced us to postpone the game," VisMin Cup chief operating officer Rocky Chan said.

The game will be played again on the final day of the elimination round.

Hours after the postponement, clips from the match surfaced online, mostly showing players missing open layups and free throws. —Justin Kenneth Carandang/JMB, GMA News
