Ginebra deals SMB its first loss for solo lead; Magnolia dismantles Phoenix

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel dealt the San Miguel Beermen its first loss, 75-72, on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena to take the solo lead in the 2022 PBA Philippine Cup.

Ginebra had a 58-50 lead at the start of the fourth period before the Beermen crawled their way back to tie it at 70 with 3:35 left. The Beermen reclaimed the lead for a brief time after a Mo Tautuaa layup before Japeth Aguilar and Christian Standhardinger pushed Ginebra's lead to 74-72 at the 01:31 mark. A split from LA Tenorio sealed the deal for Ginebra.

Standhardinger tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds while Aguilar made 15 points and 14 rebounds for Barangay Ginebra.

Simon Enciso made 18 points while CJ Perez added 17 points for SMB. June Mar Fajardo made 17 rebounds and 6 points in the Beermen's first loss of the conference.

Earlier, Magnolia dismantled the Phoenix Super LPG Fuelmasters, 95-77, despite the absence of Calvin Abueva. Mark Barroca listed 21 points, while Aris Dionisio had 19 points.

Magnolia (3-3) will have a mini-break as they will be back in action on July 2 when they play the NLEX Road Warriors, while Phoenix (2-3) will go against TNT on Sunday. Following the TNT-Phoenix match is SMB's (3-1) faceoff with the Converge Fiberxers, while Barangay Ginebra (4-1) will be back on July 1 when they play Converge as well.
