Gilas Pilipinas falls to New Zealand, will play Japan in QF qualifiers

The Gilas Pilipinas national team fell to New Zealand, 92-75, on Sunday to wrap its group phase games in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in Indonesia.

New Zealand pounded it early on in the game, limiting Gilas to just 16 points against their 30-point output in the first quarter.

The Philippines had a better showing in the second quarter as it outscored New Zealand, 22-16, to end the first half with only an eight point deficit, 46-38.

However, the Tall Blacks remained in control in the second half, which eventually gave them the win and put the Philippines to the third spot of Group D.

Kiefer Ravena tallied 17 markers and six boards while Carl Tamayo and Karl Quiambao had 14 points apiece in the loss.

Flynn Cameron led the Tall Blacks with 18 points, while Taine Murray added 16 points. Sam Mennega ruled the boards with 14 on top of his two-point output.

With the nationals' loss, the Philippines will face Japan in the qualifiers for the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
