Ateneo players appear at NBI amid probe into Baterbonia, Adili deaths

Several players of Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball team on Wednesday appeared before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) amid its investigation into the deaths of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

According to John Consulta’s report, the chief of the homicide division said 11 players appeared before the NBI at around 9 a.m.

The players gave their statements regarding the team building activity that occurred on June 8 in Aurora, where Baterbonia and Adili died in a drowning incident.

According to the report, NBI Director Melvin Matibag assured that the investigation will be fair, comprehensive, and complete.

Matibag said that Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin will appear before the bureau on Friday, June 20. Baldwin was unable to appear before the bureau on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Matibag said that they will make a recommendations based on the evidence.

Baldwin and men's basketball team manager Epok Quimpo have resigned.

In a video posted by the university, Baldwin apologized to the families of the players. Baterbonia’s mother however said that an apology is not enough.
