Manny Pacquiao now a contender for 2016 Senate seat, according to latest poll

Manny Pacquiao is a contender for a seat in the Philippine Senate in 2016, according to the latest poll results released by Pulse Asia on Monday.

The survey showed that 31.3 percent of respondents would vote for Pacquiao to be a senator, putting him in 11th to 16th places.

That represented a jump from the 25.6 percent rating that the incumbent Sarangani Representative garnered during the pollster's results released last June, which put him out of the running for a top 12 seat in the 2016 elections.

The nationwide survey interviewed 1,200 people aged 18 and up, and has a ± 3% error margin at a 95 percent confidence level.

Last July, the United Nationalist Alliance indicated that it is eyeing the WBO welterweight champion as one of its candidates for a Senate seat in 2016.

"Kung desidido siyang tumakbo, we'd like to have him," said UNA interim president and Navotas Representative Toby Tiangco.

Pacquiao himself has also indicated a desire to quit boxing to pursue a Senate run in 2016. — JST, GMA News
