Pacquiao bucks odds against Mayweather: 'Mas ganado ako na underdog'

For the first time in a long time, Manny Pacquiao will be coming into a fight as an underdog when he faces unbeaten pound-for-pound king on May 2 in Las Vegas.

But the Filipino ring icon is unfazed by the odds that he could become the first man to put a blemish on Mayweather's unbeaten record.

"Mas ganado ako na underdog ako," Pacquiao told GMA News' Connie Sison at the red carpet before the press conference for the mega-fight.

Pacquiao has not come into a fight as an underdog since he defeated Oscar De La Hoya in 2009, the match that catapulted him into global sporting superstar status.

But while people have tagged him as the underdog, Pacquiao has repeatedly expressed confidence that he could break through Mayweather's vaunted defense.

"He has a good defense but I don't worry about that. I can easily break that defense," the eight-division champion said after the press conference.

Pacquiao, known for his excellent hand speed and punching power, believes that it will all come down to offense: landing shots and hurting the opponent.

"This is boxing. It's about who will throw a lot of punches and connect the punches," said the Sarangani representative in an earlier interview with ESPN. —JST, GMA News
