Filipina boxer Irish Magno qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

Filipina boxer Irish Magno is headed to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Magno clinched her spot in the Olympiad after winning her box-off bout in the women's flyweight division during the Asia and Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Wednesday in Amman, Jordan.

The 29-year-old fighter dominated Tajikistan's Sumaiva Oosimova and claimed the victory via unanimous decision.

Magno headed to the box-off after losing to Indian six-time champ Mary Kom via unanimous decision in the women's flyweight quarterfinals.

She is the fourth Filipino to qualify for the Olympics, joining top pole vaulter EJ Obiena, world champion gymnast Carlos Yulo and fellow boxer Eumir Marcial.

Meanwhile, Filipino boxer Carlo Paalam missed out on an Olympic slot after bowing to Kazakhstan's Saken Bibossinov, 4-1, in the men's flyweight box-offs.

Paalam, however, will get another crack at the Olympics alongside world champion Nesthy Petecio in the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Paris, France in May. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/MGP, GMA News
