Roy Jones Jr. wary of ‘cannot be controlled’ Mike Tyson

Four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. will be on his toes the moment the bell rings when he shares the stage with former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson.

Jones, 51, is scheduled to lock horns with the 54-year-old Tyson in an eight-round exhibition bout on Sept. 12 in California.

Andy Foster, the head of the California State Athletic Commission, previously stated that he expected the two to go on sparring only given that it was merely an exhibition match.

But Tyson says he is going for the kill on fight night, and Jones is well aware that his foe is more than capable of doing just that.

“It's a sparring session, but you have to remember, I’m the small guy here,” Jones told Yahoo Sports.

“Andy Foster can’t control Mike once Mike gets in the ring. I’ve got to defend myself like I'm in a real fight. If Mike goes out there and decides to start hammering, what am I supposed to do, look at Andy?”

Regardless of Tyson’s intent, Jones himself said that he is coming to give his all to entertain the fans and give them their money’s worth. Come fight night, Jones says he will be ready for war.

“I've got to defend myself and get back in it,” he quipped.

“I have heard what Andy Foster said, but I also know what Mike said and I can't depend upon Andy Foster when I am in the ring with Mike. I have to get myself ready for whatever Mike may bring. I have to be ready for war.”

Jones last saw action in February 2018 against Scott Sigmon where he emerged victorious via unanimous decision after ten rounds.

Tyson, on the other hand, last fought in 2005 against Irish journeyman Kevin McBride where he fell short by way of sixth-round technical knockout. – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
