Ryan Garcia's trainer does not want him to fight Pacquiao

By JM SIASAT

Renowned trainer Eddy Reynoso is not in favor of his fighter Ryan Garcia taking on Manny Pacquiao this early in his career.

The 22-year-old WBC interim lightweight champion has been lobbying for a fight with the Filipino ring icon. But if Reynoso had his way, he would rather prevent the young fighter from getting in the ring with Pacquiao.

“I really don’t like that fight,” Reynoso told boxingscene.com in reference to Pacquiao versus Garcia.

“Manny Pacquiao has all that experience, it’s a fight at a heavier weight against (a naturally) bigger fighter. But in my role as a teacher, my job is to prepare him for these fights that he and the team accept.”

Garcia, who holds a perfect record of 21-0 with 18 knockouts, is coming off his biggest win to date via stoppage over Luke Campbell. Reynoso shared that Garcia goes to him for advice though he has not the final say on what to do in his career.

“Yes, he does consult with me just as he does with his adviser, Guadalupe Valencia, and his mother and father. But he respects my opinion when it comes to that, and I give him my opinion on those fights from my perspective and my point of view as a trainer,” he said.

“But the final decision is made by Golden Boy Promotions, by his promoter Oscar de la Hoya. They value my input and take it into consideration and I am pleased with that part of it.”

If given the task of choosing Garcia’s next foe, he would want to see his ward lock horns with Floyd Mayweather’s protégé Gervonta Davis.

“The fight I like more is Tank Davis. To me, it’s a far more interesting fight. They are at the same weight and their fight can exceed expectations.” —KG, GMA News
