Alvarez vs. Saunders announced for Cinco de Mayo weekend

The much-anticipated unification between pound-for-pound king Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and unbeaten Billy Joe Saunders was finally announced this weekend.

Alvarez, fresh off a successful defense of his WBC and WBA world super middleweight titles over Avni Yildrim, will stake his belts once more against WBO world super middleweight champion Saunders on May 8 in a yet to be determined venue.

“It's official! The unification is on! Canelo vs. Saunders for the WBC, WBA, WBO, and Ring Magazine World Championships May 8 live on DAZN,” Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn announced on Twitter.

Widely regarded as the biggest star in boxing today, Alvarez holds a record of 55-1-2 with 37 knockouts. His lone defeat came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather via majority decision in 2013.

Saunders, on the other hand, is a two-division world champion with a perfect record of 30-0 with 14 knockouts and has held the WBO super middleweight belt since May 2019. — BM, GMA News
