Mark Magsayo's handler open to rematch with Gary Russell Jr.

By JM SIASAT

MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons is willing to give Gary Russell Jr. a rematch against the newly crowned WBC world featherweight champion Mark Magsayo.

The pair squared off atop the ring this weekend where the Filipino emerged victorious via majority decision

.

"I would say Gary absolutely deserves a rematch. He fought gallantly," Gibbons told boxingscene.com.

"He fought through a lot of stuff with his father, with his brother's passing, the injury he sustained in the fight."

Russell, 33, was coming off a 23-month layoff before he took on Magsayo. Before the fight, he revealed that he has an injury that showed during the contest when he hurt his right shoulder.

To make matters worse, Russell pretty much trained by himself in camp because his father and trainer had his leg amputated because of diabetes.

Given all that Russell had to go through before the match, Gibbons is convinced that he earned a rematch with Magsayo even though the fight did not have a rematch clause.

"So, I wanted to say to everybody I believe he deserves a rematch, if it fits into the schedule, and that he's a classy guy. He really is, man," Gibbons said.

"The guy showed up, fought hurt or whatever it was, so I like the Russell family. I really do."
