David Benavidez stops Lemieux to claim WBC interim title
David Benavidez claimed the WBC interim super middleweight title following a third-round stoppage over David Lemieux on Sunday at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, USA.
Benavidez, 25, was in control from the get-go, stunning Lemieux with a left hook and then a barrage of punches before the end of round one.
Lemieux survived the onslaught, only to get dropped in the opening seconds of round two after he caught a hard left uppercut on the jaw.
It was all Benavidez the next round. He continued his relentless assault which prompted the referee to halt the contest at the 1:31 mark of round three.
"I just feel I am the strongest 168 pounder, nobody can mess with me," Benavidez said before getting asked about a potential showdown with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
"I am waiting for them to sign the contract. Them b------ know what's up. I am scared of nobody, I guarantee you I will knock everybody out."
The technical knockout victory improved Benavidez's perfect record to 26-0 with 23 knockouts while Lemieux fell to 43-5 with 36 knockouts.
