Mark Magsayo hopes for chance to avenge lone loss to Vargas should he win next fight

By JM SIASAT

Mark Magsayo is hoping to get even with Rey Vargas should he defeat former world champion Brandon Figueroa for the WBC interim featherweight title this weekend, March 4 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

Magsayo, 27, is coming off his first professional defeat courtesy of Vargas last July where he yielded his then WBC world featherweight world title against the Mexican. Should he get past the acid test that is Figueroa, the Filipino prizefighter says he wants to run it back with his old foe.

“If I get the opportunity to fight Vargas again, and I win on March 4, I’ll be ready. If he wants to come back down in weight, I’ll jump at the opportunity to fight him,” Magsayo said.

Vargas, meanwhile, also suffered his first defeat when he moved up to 130 pounds and attempted to become a three-division world champion against O'Shaquie Foster last month. Without a title at super featherweight, Vargas is likely to move back down to 126 where Magsayo awaits him.

“I’ve been smarter in training and paying more attention to the details. I’m going to add more defense and make sure that I’m always training smartly. I almost won that last fight, so there are just small adjustments that needed to be made,” Magsayo stressed.
