UAAP: UE men, FEU women win badminton titles

MANILA, Philippines – University of the East and Far Eastern University won the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s and women’s badminton titles Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall. The Red Warriors foiled La Salle’s back-to-back title bid, 3-2, while the Lady Tamaraws swept National University, 5-0, to take the title by finishing the tournament undefeated in seven games. UE, mentored by Rocky Magnaye, placed second last year while the Allan De Leon-coached FEU shuttlers occupied third spot last season. University of Santo Tomas took second place in the men’s division with a 6-1 mark followed by La Salle with a 5-2 win-loss record. FEU (4-3), University of the Philippines (3-4), Ateneo (2-5), Adamson (1-6) and NU (0-7) completed the standings. In the women’s division, La Salle, last season’s titlist UST and UE finished with similar 5-2 marks but the Lady Archers secured second spot with a superior number of set victories. The Tigresses placed third while the Lady Warriors finished fourth. Adamson placed fifth in the women’s division with a 3-4 card followed by UP (2-5), Ateneo (1-6) and NU (0-7). Winston Aquilo of UE was named the most valuable player in the men’s division, R-Jay Ormilla of UST took the rookie of the year honors and Don Johnson Agustin of UE bagged the most improved player award. Racquel Guerrero of UE snared the women’s MVP while Bianca Legaspi of UP took the ROY award. Diosan Abangan scooped the MIP plum. – GMANews.TV
