Defending women’s champion University of the East seemed to be in the position to win its third straight UAAP fencing crown when action in the 72nd season continues Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym. Jamie Nicanor led the Lady Warriors' charge after posting a 15-10 win over Ateneo's Faye Garcia in the women’s foil finals as the UE fencers remain on top of the standings. Nicanor’s win brought the Lady Warriors gold medal haul to three following UE's victory in the women’s saber team event and Mary Rose Alfonso’s triumph in the women’s individual saber. Nicanor's gold medal route started with a quarterfinal win over University of the Philippines' Natasha Guerrero and a semis triumph over teammate Czarina Arandia. Garcia, the 2007 Rookie of the year when the Lady Eagles captured the crown, earned the right of facing Nicanor after scoring wins over UP's Angelyn Cabalano and Far Eastern University's Mary Caballero. In the men's division, University of Santo Tomas and UP are tied with two gold medals each to share the lead entering Sunday's final matches. - GMANews.TV
