Defending champion University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University strengthened their hold of the 1-2 spots after prevailing over their respective opponents Wednesday in the 72nd UAAP men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. As expected, the Tigers and the Tamaraws made mincemeat of cellar dwellers Adamson and National University via scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-8, 25-12, 25-22, respectively. John Paul Torres posted 10 hits and two blocks as he spearheadd the Tigers of coach Emil Lontoc to their 12th win against only one loss while Joshua Alcarde had nine hits, two blocks and two aces as the Tamaraws garnered their 11th victory in 13 outings.

The loss further dropped the Falcons and the Bulldogs to the bottom of the standings with identical 2-11 slates. The Tamaraws of coach George Pascua, however, still have the chance to grab the no. 1 spot if they can repeat over the Tigers in their last game in the eliminations on Sunday. The Tamaraws dealt the Tigers their only setback this year with a 25-23, 21-25, 27-25, 25-20 verdict. “Hindi kami mangangako, pero nagawa na namin noong una kaya susubukan namin uling gawin," said Pascua, looking forward to that crucial match up with UST. Lontoc and his wards, though, are poised to get back at FEU and enter the next round fresh from a triumph. “Pipilitin naming makabawi. Kailangan naming manalo para buo yung kumpiyansa ng mga bata papasok ng Final Four," said Lontoc. - GMANews.TV
