Petron kept alive its flickering hopes of clinching a finals berth in the PBA Governors Cup Wednesday night, hacking out a 97-92 win over B-MEG at the Araneta Coliseum.

Sunday Salvacion buried the go-ahead three-pointer while Arwind Santos came through with a big defensive stop down the stretch as the Blaze Boosters escaped with their seventh win in 12 games to improve their chances of clinching the second championship berth in the season-ending conference. Petron now needs to beat early finalist Talk 'N Text for its remaining semifinal match on Friday and hope that either Alaska, Ginebra and Rain or Shine won't win anymore games. For the Blaze Booster to qualify outright to the Finals they must end up tied with the Gin Kings and the Aces at 8-5 by the end of the semifinal phase, since Petron holds a higher quotient against Ginebra and Alaska. "This is a game we needed badly," said Petron coach Ato Agustin with a big sigh of relief. Victory wasn't in the bag for the Blaze Boosters until Salvacion hit the go-ahead three-pointer with one minute and 14 seconds left in the game as Petron reclaimed the lead, 92-90. Santos then blocked James Yap's potential game-tying basket at the other end with Danny Ildefonso recovering the loose ball. Ildefonso was fouled in the process and made both charities to stretch the lead to 94-90. B-MEG went to Joe Devance in its next possession, but the veteran big man missed his attempt from three-point distance that led to a Santos split free throw for a 95-90 Petron lead with 24 seconds left. Import Anthony Grundy led Petron with 29 points while Santos, one of the leading candidates for the Best Player of the Conference, again produced a double-double effort with 22 markers and 13 rebounds. Yap paced the Llamados with 23 points, while Devance added 18. The Llamados, the first team to be booted out of the championship race, ended their campaign in the season-ending meet with a 5-8 (win-loss) mark. Overall, they finished the season at 20-24. — JVP, GMA News
