University of Santo Tomas is once again poised to sweep the 74th UAAP overall crown after the Tiger Cubs, its juniors squad, also lead the race for the general championship in their division at the end of first semester events. The Tiger Cubs, who has won a total of 13 juniors general champion, amassed 65 points built around their title conquest in taekwondo and second place finishes in judo and swimming (boys' and girls'). UST also finished third in table tennis but was a poor sixth in basketball. University of the East is hot on UST's trails with 62 points as the Junior Warriors topped girls' swimming and table tennis then placed second in taekwondo. UE also finished third in judo, fourth in boys' swimming and seventh in basketball. The Junior Warriors won the general championship once in the 2005 season, while Ateneo, which is running third this season with 48 points, was victorious in 2001 and 2002. Ateneo had two title runs in the first semester—judo and boys' swimming—and was fourth in basketball, fifth in taekwondo and sixth in table tennis. Rounding out the standings were La Salle-Zobel (4th, 44 points), juniors basketball champion National University (27 points), University of the Philippines-Integrated School (23 points), Far Eastern University (22 points) and Adamson University (14 points). Just like in the seniors' division, a championship finish in an event is worth 15 points, second place 12 points, fourth 10 points, fifth eight points, sixth four points, seventh two points and eighth one point. UST also positioned itself for a possible 38th general championship in the seniors' division with 151 points after seven events in the first semester. Eight more sports will be played in the second semester—baseball, softball, football, chess, tennis, fencing, athletics and volleyball. — JVP, GMA News
