Spikers from the Visayas ruled the 15th Nestea Beach volleyball National Finals as Central Philippine University successfully defended its women's crown while University of the Visayas topped the men's division in separate matches over the weekend in Boracay. Top seeded CPU bets Jocelyn Gonzaga and Fiola Mae Ceballos scored a 21-13, 21-17 decision over University of Mindanao-Tagum's Lourdilyn Catubag and Kay Quilario in the women's finals. The UV spikers shared the spotlight after Mike Abria and Jade Becaldo bested fellow Visayans University of San Jose-Recoletos' Jade Illut and Jason Uy, 21-16, 21-19. Both Visayan squads received P100,000 each from their feat while the runners-up settled for the P65,000 cash prize. University of Santo Tomas, the NCR representative, placed third after the pair of Maruja Banaticla and Judy Ann Caballejo pulled off a 17-21, 21-14, 15-7 victory over Adamson's Angela Benting and Pau Soriano. UM-T's Daryl Kim Lapiz and Jefty Amora finished third in the men's division after a 21-14, 17-21, 15-12 triumph over Arellano U's John Carlo Lozada and Chris Salvador. UST and UM-T took home P35,000 each while Adamson and AU both earned P22,500 in the Philippine Volleyball Federation-sanctioned tournament. — JVP, GMA News
