The Ateneo Blue Eagles held off Mapua's inspired fourth quarter rally to beat the Cardinals, 78-75, and secure their sixth win in seven outings in the 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup.   Ateneo jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter and outscored Mapua after 10 minutes of play, 21-13. Mapua, behind Josan Nimes' 11 points, countered in the second period for a 32-all count at the half.   The Blue Eagles regrouped in the third, pouring on 24 to Mapua's 13. In the fourth, Nimes and Gab Banal found extra firepower from teammates Kenneth Ighalo and Yousef Taha.   The Cardinals late rally yielded 30 points, but Ateneo's frontcourt tandem of Nico Salva and Greg Slaughter proved to be unstoppable to complete the victory.   Salva carried the Eagles with 27 points, 20 of them coming in the second half. The 74th UAAP Finals MVP also had six rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Slaughter tallied 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and a block.   Nimes drained four three-pointers for a 24-point effort for Mapua. Banal added 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and a steal in the losing effort.   Lyceum, behind the combined efforts of its veterans and a clamping down on defense, captured its first win in the tournament, a 59-47 decision over Emilio Aguinaldo College.   The trio of Chris Cayabyab, Floricel Guevarra, and Shane Ko combined for 41 of the team's total output. Noube Happi had nine points and 15 rebounds as EAC suffered its fourth loss in the tournament.

The Jose Rizal U Heavy Bombers used a strong first half in beating the San Sebastian Golden Stags, 79-65, in the final seniors' game.   The Heavy Bombers built a commanding 43-31 spread at turn. The Stags rallied in the third and outscored JRU, 14-11. But the Alex Almario-Nate Matute tandem carried the Bombers' offense to offset the efforts of Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva in the fourth, where JRU outscored the Stags, 25-20.   Almario scored 22 points in 27 minutes for JRU, with more than half of his output coming from the free throw line (13-of-14, 93 percent shooting clip). Matute came of the bench to finish with 15 points, 12 coming from the three-point area.   Sangalang tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds while Alvin peppered his stat sheet with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Stags.   The win stretches JRU's streak to three, after an opening day loss to National University. — JVP, GMA News Scores:
