Monico Cup quarterfinals resume Thursday

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines - Hostilities in the quarterfinals phase of the ongoing 2008 Monico Cup Inter-Barangay summer basketball tournament resumes Thursday morning at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center (NomPac) at the Provincial Capitol area, said tournament committee chair Monico 'Nicky' Puentevella Jr. At 8 a.m., Barangay Singcang-Airport tangles against Barangay Villamonte while Barangay 35 takes on Barangay Pahanocoy in the following game at 10 a.m. The winners will join early quarterfinal winners Barangay Cabug and Barangay Taculing in the semi-finals scheduled this Saturday, May 31, at the West Negros University Gym. Championship and awarding ceremonies are slated Sunday, June 1st, also at the WNU Gym. Barangay Cabug defeated former champion Barangay Bata, 68-58, in the first quarterfinal match last Tuesday at the WNU Gym while otherwise unheralded Barangay Taculing edged Barangay 19, 78-77, in the second quarterfinal. The Monico Cup tournament, now on its fifth year, is a grassroots outreach sports project of the congressional district office of lone district of Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella. All games in the quarterfinals up to the championship are open to the public for free. - Sun.Star
