Azkals bow to Malaysia in FAS Tri-Nations Series opener

In their first taste of action this year, the Philippine Azkals were dealt a loss after absorbing a 2-0 defeat from Malaysia in the FAS Tri-Nations Series on Wednesday at the Singapore National Stadium.

Malaysian forward Akhyar Rashid scored both goals for his side as the Filipinos opened their campaign on a losing note.

The Philippine team is composed of a 25-man team led by goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and midfielder John Patrick Strauss as well as the debuting Gerrit Holtmann. Team captain Stephan Schrock and Bienvenido Maranon were also called up.

The tournament will serve as as the team’s buildup for the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 qualifiers slated for June 2022 in Mongolia.

The Azkals will look to bounce back on March 29 when they face host Singapore at 8 p.m.
