Tennis: PHL steamrolls through Pakistan to reach Davis Cup Final
The Philippines shut out Pakistan over the weekend at the Philippine Columbian Association tennis courts in Manila to reach the final round of the group stages at the 2012 Davis Cup. The Philippines didn't drop a single set to the Pakistanis in the five-match series. Johnny Arcilla defeated Ageel Khan 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in the opening match, while teammate Treat Huey closed Friday's events by beating Yasir Khan 6-1, 6-0, 6-3. On Saturday, the Philippines played the lone doubles event in the series with Ruben Gonzales and Treat Huey disposing of Amir Khan and Jalil Khan 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Then on Easter Sunday, Francis Alacantara beat Muhammad Abid 6-2, 6-1, and veteran Johnny Arcilla defeated Yasir Khan, 6-3, 6-4. After being included in Group I the past two years, the Philippines have looked strong so far in Group II. The country’s bets previously swept Pacific Oceania 5-0 in Camarines Sur, earlier in the year, living up to their position as the number one overall seed in the Asia/Oceania Zone. The Philippines will face third seed Indonesia in the Finals in September, with the winner climbing back to Group I. As of writing, the Philippines moved up two spots in the world rankings to 38, while Indonesia advanced six places to 49. - AMD, GMA News
