With the emergence of Philippine Rugby, members of the Volcanoes are encouraging everybody to try out the sport.
"I think it's a fantastic game for Filipinos because its open for all ages, all sizes. You can be small. Some players on the team aren't very big but theyre very fast. Filipinos are fast. You do get big Filipinos as well. Think of the basketball players. (They're) perfect for this game. We wanna grow this game for Filipinos," said Justin "The Flying Jeepney" Coveney.
In FTW's latest episode, hosts Alvin Perez, Popoy Clarino, Nate Dy-Liaco, and Icko De Guzman discussed who among the current crop of PBA and UFL athletes can find a spot in our rugby team.
PBA enforcers
For Clarino, Powerade enforcer Alex Crisano is perfect for rugby.
"Ako Ali Peek, eto na talaga pwede niya gamitin yung pagka 'Man Mountain' niya," said Perez.
Dy-Liaco, on the other hand, would like to sustain the presence of siblings in sports, choosing brothers Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Carlo Sharma.
UFL bruisers
There are also rugby-worthy athletes in the UFL. Clarino claims that Pachanga's Freddy Gonzales fits the mold, while Dy-Liaco thinks Azkal and Air Force veteran Ian Araneta will do quite well.
De Guzman maintains that Azkals of new and old are highly qualified, identifying Juani Guirado and Tats Mercado.
Special mention also went to Loyola's Matthey Hartman, while Kaya's Aly Borromeo and Jason Sabio also get the nod. — RAF/JVP, GMA News
