The Philippine national team Volcanoes put up more of a fight, but the result was still a loss, 59-20, in their HSBC Asian 5 Nations match against Hong Kong, Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. The team had previously given up a 121-0 rout against Japan last April 20 in Japan. “The scoreline flattered us in the end,” said Hong Kong head coach Leigh Jones afterwards in a statement. “I don’t think they deserved to shift 50 points. But I’m proud of my guys." In front of their home fans, the Volcanoes drew first blood, via a penalty kick by Alex Aronson, who later made it 10-7, following a Hong Kong penalty try. At the half, Hong Kong was up 14-10, but Aronson got his side within a point, 14-13, via another penalty kick. Hong Kong however began scoring in bunches, and things got worse for the local side after Michael Duhig was hit with a yellow card. Aronson once again provided another score, for a 47-20 tally, but insurance scores by the visiting side closed things out. Up next for the Philippines is South Korea on May 11, before the team swings back to Manila, to play the United Arab Emirates on May 18. - AMD, GMA News
