Daughter of kwek-kwek vendor Margielyn Didal is PHL's latest golden girl

Margielyn Arda Didal became the latest golden girl for the Philippines in the 2018 Asian Games after ruling the women's street skate competition at the JSC Skate Park in Palembang on Wednesday.

With her victory, Didal could receive up to P6 million in cash incentives from the government and private patrons, which she plans to use to help out her family.

“Bibigay ko po sa nanay ko para makapagtayo kami ng small business,” said Didal, whose mother is a sidewalk vendor of kwek-kwek — eggs fried in flour batter — near the Concave Skate Park in Cebu City where she was discovered by coach Danny Gutierrez.

Philippine Olympic Committee president Ricky Vargas praised Didal's fortitude.

“I am blessed to witness this great event by a young girl, a carpenter’s daughter and former street kid, who did so well. Because of her hard work and belief in herself she is now where she is,” he said.

“Congratulations Margie. The country is grateful for your efforts and sacrifices ,” added Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez in statement from Manila. “We are arranging a hero’s welcome for you."

Didal dominated the field with a top score of 30.4 points, far apace of second place Isa Kaya of Japan who managed just 25.0 points.

“I am very happy I did my best. Sobra ang saya po, lalung–lalo na sa mga skateboarders natin,” said Didal, who was the favorite heading into the competition.

“Gusto ko rin na maipakita na skateboarding is a serious sport but can also be fun as well,” she added. —JST, GMA News
