Champion marathoner Rafael Poliquit dies

Filipino marathoner Rafael Poliquit Jr. passed away on Thursday afternoon, according to the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

"You ran a good race. Thank you for all you did for the Philippine sports," the PSC said in a Facebook post.

The 30-year-old athlete who was supposed to represent the Philippines in the upcoming 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Subic died "due to complications from subdural emphyema."

Poliquit hails from Tagum City, Davao del Norte. He won as Milo Marathon champion thrice—in 2014, 2015, and 2018. He achieved his latest Milo Marathon trophy by beating his previous records and clocking his personal best.

He also represented the country with Mary Joy Tabal in the 2016 Boston Marathon. —Dona Magsino/NB, GMA News
