16-year-old half-Pinay makes history by winning French Open juniors title

A 16-year old half-Filipina teenager from Canada won the girls' singles title at the French Open tennis tournament in Paris on Saturday, making history as the first Canadian to win the title.

Leylah Annie Fernandez broke Emma Navarro of the United States twice in the first set and three times in the second to claim an impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory in the finals, according to a report by Tennis Canada.

This win brought the teenager from Laval, Quebec the Grand Slam juniors title.

With this title, Fernandez joins Canadian athletes Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov as title winners on the junior tennis circuit.

Fernandez won the title without dropping a set or even facing a tiebreak, Tennis Canada reported. — Joviland Rita/BM, GMA News
