Geje Eustaquio closely studying Yuya Wakamatsu, mastering two new techniques for upcoming fight

Former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje Eustaquio is closely studying Yuya Wakamatsu ahead of their recently announced showdown.

The pair of high level strikers are set to compete in a ONE flyweight world grand prix alternate bout which is set to take place on the undercard of ONE: Dawn of Heroes on August 2 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

"I'm now learning more about him since I have focused on studying him now unlike before where I only got to see him fighting inside the cage," said Eustaquio.

"He's a great kid, but considering the fact that it is a 27 days notice, for now I will focus more on myself in getting to one hundred percent fighting shape and devising a game plan."

Wakamatsu is widely known for packing dynamite in both hands.

And while he lost his ONE Championship debut via unanimous decision against Danny Kingad last September, he nevertheless showcased his devastating power when he knocked down the Filipino with a single right hand.

In his last bout, Wakamatsu held his own against pound-for-pound great Demetrious Johnson before falling short by second-round submission this past March.

Eustaquio acknowledges that he has to be careful with his opponent's strikes, but ultimately believes that his precision would overcome the Japanese athlete's dreaded punching power.

"I think, yes, he has the power, but sometimes you have to be complete. He has the power, but they also say timing beats power. He's not impossible to defeat, I can beat this kid," he said.

"He is a sharp striker and he is a talented young fighter. It's a big factor of course his power, but I will find my way, I will find a hole in his game then capitalize on it."

And while Eustaquio refused to predict how his next fight would end, he simply revealed that he is in the process of mastering a couple of new techniques that he plans to showcase in front of Filipino fans.

"I am developing two special techniques right now which I am much excited to show them," he told. "I hope I can polish and perfect it before August 2 comes." — BAP, GMA News
