Carlos Yulo’s incentives helped build family home in Manila, says thankful mom

Even before his gold-medal win in Germany over the weekend, Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo had been helping his loved ones through the incentives he earned because of the sport.

According to Sandra Aguinaldo's report on GMA News' 24 Oras, the family considers as its treasure the medals Yulo won in various competitions, victories which helped the family build their home.

With his victory in Germany, Yulo is slated to bring home aside from his gold medal at least P1 million.

Angelica admitted that the family did not expect the win as Yulo was facing veterans for the men's floor title at the 9th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championship.

Sobrang saya, parang gusto mong umiyak sa sobrang katuwaan mo," Angelica said.

However, she said the family knew how hard Yulo trained under his Japanese coach for the country and his family.

Due to the intensive training, the family did not see Yulo for 10 months. They last saw him in early January.

"Masaya po, nakaka-proud, sobra. Parang blessed ka po," Yulo's father said.

Yulo bested silver medalist Artem Dolgopyat of Israel with just a 0.1 margin on Saturday.

He returned to the country on Tuesday evening, the long separation from his family rewarded by a historical win not only for the Philippines, but for his loved ones as well. —Joahna Lei Casilao/NB, GMA News
