SEA Games beach volleyball, 7 other sports skeds may be affected by Tisoy

The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) is preparing changes in the schedule of some events in Subic due to the expected arrival of Typhoon Tisoy.

According to a statement released by PHISGOC sports director Karen Tanchanco-Caballero on Monday night, the schedules of the following sports are subject to change:

  • Beach volleyball
  • Canoe/kayak/traditional boat race
  • Muay thai
  • Pencak silat
  • Sailing/windsurfing
  • Triathlon/duathlon
  • Modern pentathlon
  • Surfing

Meanwhile, table tennis, sepak takraw, chess, beach handball, rowing and open water swim will still push through with their original competition schedule.

Earlier, PHISGOC chief operating officer Ramon Suzara said contingency plans are in place for the biennial meet events that will be affected by the typhoon.

"[C]ontingency plans have been in place a long time ago. There's an operating policy for all competition and venue managers, including technical delegates in case there are typhoons, cancellations and delays," Suzara said in a press briefing at the World Trade Center.

Suzara also emphasized that there will be no extension of the Games.

A change in format or going through the games without an audience are among those the organizers will consider if ever scheduled events will be affected by the typhoon.

However, Suzara also noted that interruption of some events might happen should there be heavy rains and strong winds.

"If it's really strong, we have to cancel the matches or postpone or delay. But anyway, everything has been placed," he said.

The SEA Games formally opened at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan on Saturday. It will run until December 11. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/JST, GMA News
