Late replacement Jorge Masvidal had to cut 20 pounds in six days for UFC 251

By JM SIASAT

Jorge Masvidal had to endure a grueling 20-pound weight cut in six days for his upcoming title fight against the defending UFC welterweight world champion Kamaru Usman.

The pair is slated to headline UFC’s first pay-per-view event on July 11 (July 12 PHL time) at Fight Island in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Usman (16-1) was signed to fight number one contender Gilbert Burns, but the latter was taken out of the card after he tested positive for COVID-19.

The UFC then went to Masvidal (35-13) on late notice to salvage the main event, giving “Gamebred” less than a week to make the welterweight limit of 170 pounds.

“Twenty pounds in six days, that’s all I’m gonna say. It was rough. But I did it. I get sh—done,” Masvidal shared.

To Masvidal’s credit, he never failed to make weight in his 17 years as a professional prizefighter.

And despite not having a full camp for his upcoming bout and the taxing weight cut he had to do, Masvidal is confident of his chances against the champion.

“The opponent in front of me is very tameable,” he quipped.

“I’m hurting though, initially during the weight cut, but now it’s all behind me. I made the weight, I’ve already got liquids in me, food in me, so pretty soon it’ll be just party time.” —KG, GMA News
