The last athlete Khabib Nurmagomedov wants to fight before he retires

Reigning UFC lightweight world champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is looking to have two more fights then call it a day in professional mixed martial arts.

Currently unbeaten with a record of 28-0, Nurmagomedov is scheduled to feature in a unification showdown with UFC interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 254 on Oct. 24 in a yet to be determined venue.

The goal is obviously to retire without a blemish on his record, and should he overcome Gaethje, he eyes a last hurrah with the man touted as the greatest of all time in MMA.

“It was discussed on numerous occasions, 30 and 0,” Khabib’s trainer Javier Mendez told ESPN.

“And GSP was definitely the legacy fight. If they can complete that, I could see 30-0 and he’s done. I can definitely see that. That conversation was brought up numerous times while I was with them.”

GSP, or better known as Georges St-Pierre, is a retired UFC two-division world champion. He last saw action inside the cage at UFC 217 in November 2017 against Michael Bisping where he claimed the UFC middleweight world title via third-round submission after a four-year hiatus.

Oddsmakers were also quick to assess the prospective showdown between the two. The dream match placed Nurmagomedov as a -200 favorite while St. Pierre checked in as a +170 underdog.

With the passing of his father Abdulmanap, Nurmagomedov is on a mission to secure the legacy that the family has always wanted for the Russian superstar.

“Everything his father wanted him to do, Khabib would go out and accomplish it. Now, he doesn’t have that. So, he’s got to focus on the legacy his father wanted for him.” – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
