Hidilyn Diaz has gone down in history as the first Filipino athlete who quenched a 97-year gold medal drought in the Olympics.

But did you know that there was another Pinoy athlete who came before her?

Arianne Cerdeña competed in the 1988 Seoul edition of the Summer Games and captured a gold medal in the women's tenpin bowling event. Her feat, however, was not officially counted as it was only a demonstration sport back then.

But during those golden moments, Lupang Hinirang, the Philippine national anthem, was played in honor of Cerdeña's achievement.

Thirty-three years later, Diaz completed another golden run for the Philippines after topping the women's 55 kg division of weightlifting event. She also set a new record by lifting the 127 kg in her last clean and jerk attempt.

Cerdeña, 59, could not be any prouder of the honor her fellow Filipina athlete brought to the country.

"I'm so proud of her. It's a job well done. I had a gut feeling that she could make it," Cerdeña, who is now based in Los Angeles, California, told GMA News Online.

She also said that Diaz' triumph surely brought hope to the country, especially to a young Filipino generation yearning to be the best at what they do.

"There is no stopping us now," she said.
