Weightlifter Elreen Ando falls short of Olympic medal in Tokyo

Elreen Ando closed her campaign outside of the top three in the women's 64 kg division of Tokyo Olympics weightlifting competition Tuesday at the Tokyo International Forum.

The rising weightlifter failed to break into the top three scores of her category, putting an end to her maiden Olympic appearance.

The 22-year-old successfully cleared her first attempt at snatch with 96 kg but struggled to hoist 99 kg in her second try for a no lift decision.

Ando finished her three snatch attempts after lifting 100 kg for the ninth spot.

She continued her impressive showing in the clean and jerk by lifting 118 kg in her first attempt to take the lead with a total of 218 kg.

She, however, failed in her second lift but was successful in third at 122 kg.

Her final score was 222 kg, 100 kg from snatch and 122 from clean and jerk, which was not enough for her to join the medal contenders.

The young lifter had seen action in both the Southeast Asian Games, where she won a silver plum in 2019, and in the 2020 Asian Championships where she also took home the silver.
