Baloyskie wants to prove Onic PH belongs in winner's circle

Winning a championship has proven to be elusive for Onic Philippines, which clinched bridesmaid finishes in the team's previous competitions—both in the local scene and on the world stage.

But Onic is out to change the narrative, starting in the current season of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Philippines.

They did just that when they stunned back-to-back defending champion Blacklist International

in their best-of-three affair on Friday night to start their Season 9 campaign on the right note.

"Gusto kong patunayan na hindi lang kami pang-runner-up, hindi lang dito sa Pilipinas pati sa ibang bansa," said skipper Allen Jendric "Baloyskie" Baloy in the post-game interview.

(I want to prove that our team isn't just a runner-up team, not only here in the Philippines but as well as in other countries.)

Onic came close to the title many times in the past.

They wound up second in both Seasons 4 and 5 of MPL PH and fourth in Season 6. In Season 8 and in the M3 World Championship, they performed very well but fell just short of the first spot, falling in both against perennial rival Blacklist International.

Kairi "Kairi" Rayosdelsol, who was hailed the match MVP, said they just want to start strong and hope that it can go all the way to the playoffs and to the title.

"Una, gusto namin mag-number one sa regular season tapos pagpatuloy namin lakas namin mag-dominate hanggang playoffs tapos mag-champion," the 16-year-old Kairi said.

(First, we want to get the top spot after the regular season, then continue our dominance all the way to the playoffs then win the championship.)

Onic's next assignment will be on Sunday against nexplay Evos at 4 p.m.
