Bren goes back to basics in sweep win vs top seed Echo, shares coach Ducky

After pulling off the biggest upset in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Philippines Season 9, Bren Esports shared that they just went back to the fundamentals in stunning heavy favorite Echo on Saturday.

Bren head coach Francis "Ducky" Glindro said they weren't too technical in terms of how they approached the match and even admitted that they didn't make any special preparations ahead of the game.

In fact, Ducky said they didn't even expect to sneak a win against the super team Echo, let alone pull off a 2-0 sweep.

"Honestly, no [I did not expect to win]. That's the short answer mainly because we've been struggling for the past couple of weeks but I gradually changed the mindset of the team," said Ducky.

"We went back to our fundamentals and just played based on our instincts and I think it went smoothly just because we weren't really being technical in terms of like analysis, analyzing the game, [and]  how we approach it. So basically the fundamentals [are] we enjoyed it and just play how you play when you're playing."

Prior to the clash, Bren, a former world champion, was carrying a 1-6 card while Echo was at the other end of the standings with an impressive 6-1 win-loss record.

Echo, for its part, said the loss humbled the team despite being tagged as one of the favorites to rule the tournament with a core led by Karl "KarlTzy" Nepomuceno and Tristan "Yawi" Cabrera.

Echo coach Michael Angelo "Arcadia" Bocado accepted the defeat, saying it just showed that they still have a lot to improve on in their game moving forward.

"May mga (miscommunications) kami doon sa actual game itself and we're going to say na parang one of the bad days kasi. Bad day talaga siya pero no excuses, meron pa kaming mga kailangang linisin talaga," Arcadia said.

"Maganda na rin for us siguro, parang blessing in disguise na rin siya kasi at least hindi pa playoffs and mahaba pa 'yung regular season. Pwede pa kaming bumalik sa drawing board para magawa yung mga adjustments."

Bren will have a break before facing RSG on March 25 while Echo will look to bounce back on Sunday, March 20, when it faces Omega.
